Using a DisplayLink Docking Station with a KVM Switch: Is it Possible?

If you're using a DisplayLink-based docking station and considering using it with a traditional KVM switch, we do not recommend or support this setup. However, there are alternative solutions available.

A KVM switch is a hardware device that allows you to control multiple computers from a single keyboard, video monitor, and mouse. KVM stands for Keyboard, Video, and Mouse. With a KVM switch, you can easily switch between different computers without having to use multiple sets of peripherals. This can be useful in situations where you need to work with multiple computers but don't have enough desk space or want to avoid clutter.

If you simply need to share the dock between two systems, the dock can be manually disconnected from the first system and then manually connected to the second system. While this approach works, it can be inconvenient and time-consuming.

For those looking for a more permanent solution that does not require disconnecting the unit from the host system, a USB 3.0 Sharing Switch can be used as an alternative to share the dock between two systems. Please note that the dock can only be used by one system at a time.

Why do we not recommend or support using our DisplayLink-based Docking Stations with a traditional KVM switch? The primary reason is that DisplayLink technology relies on a direct connection between the host system and the docking station. A KVM switch interrupts this connection and can cause issues with video and USB connectivity.

Additionally, DisplayLink technology is designed to work with a single host system at a time. If multiple systems are connected to the docking station via a KVM switch, it can cause conflicts and lead to unpredictable behavior.

We understand that some users may have specific requirements that make using a KVM switch with a docking station seem like an attractive option. However, we strongly advise against this setup to ensure the best possible performance and user experience.

In summary, if you need to share a DisplayLink-based docking station between two systems, manually disconnecting and reconnecting the dock is an option. However, for a more permanent solution, a USB 3.0 Sharing Switch can be used to share the dock between two systems. Just remember that the dock can only be used by one system at a time.
